Lot Essay

The present bronze, adapted from Giambologna's model, is nearly identical to another version, also gilded but with Fortuna's wheel as a base, sold at Sotheby's London, 11 December 1986, lot 81.

The model has been traditionally paired with Giambologna's Mercury which, like the present model, is supported from below by a puffing wind-god.
