SIGNED 'RIDEL A PARIS', CIRCA 1785
The circular white enamel dial with Arabic chapters signed 'Ridel à Paris', with pierced and engraved ormolu hands, the movement with twin spring barrels, silk suspended pendulum and countwheel strike on a bell, within a circular drum case surmounted by a figure of Cupid holding floral swags and supported by clouds, all resting on a pair of addorsed spaniels, the rectangular base with rounded end mounted with floral swags and the front hung with a tassled drapery swag with central laurel spray, on tapering turned feet headed by flower-filled baskets, Cupid's torch lacking

Lot Essay

Ridel is recorded in the Rue aux Ours, Paris in 1800.

A number of clocks of this model are known, including one signed 'Paris', sold from the Alexander Collection, Christie's New York, 30 April 1999, lot 166 ($55,200 including premium). Another with movement by Gaston Jolly, was sold anonymously at Ader, Picard, Tajan, Paris, 18 June 1980, lot 110, and a further example was sold anonymously in Paris, at Palais Galliera, 26 May 1972, lot 66. One signed Cronier Paris but with a white marble base, is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, Paris, 1997, p. 278., fig. B. A pair of chenets decorated with related spaniels at Waddesdon is illustrated in G. de Bellaigue, The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor , 1974, Vol. II, p. 736, No. 189, and another pair is at Pavlovsk, illustrated in Pavlovsk, the Collections, Paris, 1993, p. 195, fig. 45.
