With the creation of the 'Ultramobile' collection in 1971, Dino Gavina and his company Simon International merged art and design in a new and groundbreaking way, collaborating with artists such as Meret Oppenheim, Sebastiano Matta and Man Ray to create furniture often influenced by surrealism. Gavina's close friendship with Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray in particular was an important influence on his aesthetic vision. In the brochure to the 'Ultramobile' collection Gavina wrote: "Design and Ultramobile are two universes which run parallel, compensating each other, complementing each other. ... Ultramobile is not a painting, it is not a sculpture, nor is it furniture. ... Ultramobile, which can also be used as furniture, is an object full of amazement, a totem that evokes astonishment, a presence that pulsates and that breathes in your home (...). Ultramobile is an adventure".
The present tables were designed as an hommage to the artist Constantin Brancusi, and are strongly reminiscent of the bases Brancusi placed many of his sculptures on.
Dino Gavina has confirmed that these tables were only executed in very limited numbers.
