Original publisher's blue-gray paper boards, uncut, with original orange paper printed spine labels, (several covers detached, paper spines quite worn, labels a bit chipped); Atlas: original cloth-backed green paper boards, upper cover with decorative label, engraved frontispiece of Washington crossing the Delaware, 10 double-page engraved maps by J. Yeager. THE MAPS HANDCOLORED. (Without the 22-page list of subscribers). Although the work is not uncommon, sets uncut and in original publisher's binding are RARE.
FIRST EDITION, OCTAVO FORMAT, IN ORIGINAL BOARDS. "It is impossible to contemplate the great events which have occurred in the United States under the auspices of Washington, without ascribing them, in some measure, to him..." (Marshall, 5:779). Marshall's fundamental biography of Washington was compiled largely from the late President's voluminous papers, at that date in the possession of his nephew, Bushrod. Howes M317; Sabin 44788 ("indispensible work"). (6)
