SHERMAN'S WEST POINT REPORT CARD. "Extract from the Class and Conduct Reports for the Military Academy...furnished for the information of Parents and Guardians." Cadet Sherman's class consisted of 49; he ranked tenth in Natural Philosophy, fourth in Chemistry and seventh in drawing. He received four demerits for the month and a total of 33 since the commencement of the Academic year. By the time he graduated the following year, Sherman was sixth in his class, and the number of his classmates had dropped to 42. He spent 13 years in the Army after graduation, as an artillery officer in the Mexican War and then in various California garrisons. He resigned in 1853 to pursue a legal career, but in 1857 became commandant of a fledgling military school in Alexandria, Louisiana that later grew to become Louisiana State University. He was there when Louisiana seceded in 1860, and he promptly resigned to volunteer for the Union Army.
