BOLDLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by the President on front endpaper to the Secretary of State who negotiated that Treaty: "To Hon. Dean Acheson, with best wishes for a happy holiday season. Harry S. Truman Dec. 25, 1951."
Acheson was an essential member of the diplomatic team that helped Truman craft his greatest foreign policy successes: the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, the creation of NATO and the implementation of a lasting peace among the great powers of western Europe. Acheson revered Truman, calling him "the captain with a mighty heart" and was proud to serve as his "faithful first lieutenant." Truman returned the praise, saying Acheson was "among the greatest Secretaries of State this country had."
