TRUMAN ON THE MEANING OF LIBERALISM: "I THINK IT MEANS 'SERVICE TO ALL THE PEOPLE.'" Truman reflects on the meaning of liberalism and the character of his party: "It is going to be necessary for the Democratic Party to be the Party of the People, which some call 'Liberal.' I think it means 'Service to all the people.' The word 'Liberal' has been abused and misused just as the Russians have mistreated the word 'Democracy' - but I think you know what I mean and those of us who believe in the welfare of all the people must see that the Democratic Party will triumph in the next election, and I think it will." After 20 years of Democratic rule, and in spite of Truman's prediction, the voters turned to the GOP in 1952.
