Reagan conveys his deep and strong religious beliefs in this short letter: "I'm not sure," he begins, "I understand your definition of the terms you used so let me simply answer your questions in my own way. I believe the Bible is the result of Divine inspiration & is not just a history. I believe in it. I was raised in the Christian Church which as you know believes in baptism when the individual has made his own decision to accept Jesus. My decision was made in my early teens. I hope this answers your questions." Reagan's religious commitment was deep and consistent throughout his life. Paul Kengor, the author of God and Ronald Reagan, argued that Reagan's religious background not only shaped his later spiritual life, but moulded his political talents as well: "the Great Communicator found his first audiences in a church. He learned to speak in a church."
