Trapped Bird

The three Azzawi paintings included in this sale are representative of the mature style in Dia Azzawi's oeuvre. Since the 1960s his early subdued figural compositions, Azzawi's work has slowly evolved to a more abstracted and expressionistic style. Both Trapped Bird (lot 18) and Portrait of a Visitor (lot 20) are acrylics with vaguely figurative elements on backgrounds made up of colourful patches of paint; whilst the large landscape format canvas Oriental Taqsim in Red (lot 19) is rather more abstracted.
