Lempicka first treated the subject La Sagesse in a work executed on panel in 1940-41 (Blondel B.221). While the placement of the figure within the picture field as well as the subject recall the work of the Flemish painter, Quentin Metsys (1466-1530), the execution of the work remains entirely Lempicka. Combining elements drawn from French Cubism, Purism and Neo-Classicism, Lempicka synthesized her own boldly cosmpolitan classic-realist style.
