According to his second book of accounts, Ferneley painted three works for the Earl of Lonsdale in 1825, a small picture of a horse and hounds, a portrait of the horse master and the present work. Later, in 1828, he also records a painting for the Hon. Countess of Lonsdale of herself, horse, groom and hounds.
Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale succeeded to the title from his uncle, William Lowther, 2nd Earl (b. 1787) who was Lord of the Admiralty 1809, a Commander for Indian Affairs 1810-18 and a Lord of the Treasury 1813-27. Henry Lowther was born in 1818 and was sometime M.P. for West Cumberland, a Captain of the 1st Life Guards, a Colonel of the Cumberland and Westmorland Yeoman Cavalry, and Lord-Lieutenant for Westmorland and Cumberland. He married Emily Susan, daughter of St. George Francis Caulfeild, of Donamon. He died in 1876 and was succeeded by his eldest son St. George Henry, 4th Earl of Lonsdale. At the time the present work was painted the sitter was 7 years old.
