Lot Essay

Accompanied by a letter from Gabriel 'Gabi' Tolkowsky with the following content:

'The Rock'

It was a massive rough diamond that did weigh 86.09 carats. Its challenge was the fine silky warm colour, its clear and attractive volume and its promise. The challenge was to remove by sawing some 10.62 carats and to shape, fashion, and polish a new style of facets as to reach 50.53 carats of a unique, unprecedented 'fashion' that represents another novelty, a warm coloured 'Rock', another beauty, powerful beauty that will adore its beholder with pride, joy and companionship, forever!

Signed Gabi S. Tolkowsky, Antwerp, 26 February 2006

Gabriel Tolkowsky is one of the worlds' most imaginative and respected diamond master cutters. Gabi learned his craft from his illustrious father, Jean Tolkowsky, a pioneer master cutter, and followed in the footsteps of his great uncle, Marcel Tolkowsky, who, in 1919, set the exact parameters for the standard brilliant cut, which serves as a benchmark for diamond cutting to this day. During his 40 year carreer, Gabi has been entrusted with cutting some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the 273.85 carat 'Centenary' diamond, the largest colorless, flawless, modern-cut diamond, and the 'Golden Jubilee', a 545.65 carat fancy yellow-brown diamond, the largest polished diamond in the world today. He himself was the creator of five new diamond cuts, which concentrate on maximizing brilliance, color or yield - or a combination of all three from off-color rough diamonds previously thought difficult to cut profitably into conventional round or fancy shapes. Named for flowers, these cuts are largely based on unorthodox angle dimensions. The overall proportions as well as the use of more facets around the pavilion increase brilliance and improve visual impact when viewed face-up. The cut of 'The Rock' once again displays his expertise in bringing out the best of rough.
