FROM THE COLLECTION OF PRINCESS OLGA OF YUGOSLAVIA including jewels formerly the property of GRAND DUCHESS VLADIMIROVNA OF RUSSIA and QUEEN OLGA OF GREECE
Princess Olga of Yugoslavia, born Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark (1903-1997), was a granddaughter of Danish-born King George I (1845-1913) and Queen Olga of Greece (1851-1926), a granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia (1796-1855). Her mother was Grand Duchess Helena Vladimirovna of Russia (1882-1957), granddaughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881).
A 'very royal' princess she embodied grace and elegance, tastefully enhanced by her magnificent jewellery: some of her diamond jewellery Princess Olga inherited from her mother who had been given the diamonds of her mother the Grand Duchess Vladimir (1854-1920). The Grand Duchess Vladimir was famed for her - even for Russian aristocratic standards - incredible collection of jewellery, above all for her outstanding emeralds. Princess Olga's jewels are a testimony of grander times and a reminder of her status as a descendant of Tsar Alexander II as well as of an era soon to be part of the past. She was one of the last princesses to have played with the children of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), the last Emperor of Russia.
A celebrated beauty of her time, she married in 1923 HRH Prince Paul of Yugoslavia, who became Regent after the assassination of his cousin King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in 1934. She then was officially known as Princess Paul of Yugoslavia. When in 1945, Yugoslavia became a republic, and the Yugoslav Royal Family went into exile, Paul and Olga settled in South Africa where they raised their three children.
