Miss Weston inherited the stomacher from her great grandmother who is thought to have acquired it in 1688. Miss Weston was a descendent of Chevalier John d'Este, brother of Queen Mary Beatrice of Modena. Bequeathed by Miss Weston to Sophia Margaret Penn in 1764, a relation of Miss Weston and granddaughter of William Penn of Pennsylvania and wife of the Most Rev. and Hon William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. Thence by descent to the 1997 vendor.
The wedding suit of James, Duke of York and later King James II, 1673, is now in the V&A and is also embroidered in gold and silver with honeysuckle. The stomacher has comparable embroidery motifs.
