Lot Essay

The present work depicts the side view of Lafyette's Headquarters in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania with a large buttonwood tree. At one time the building was called Gilpin's Tavern, which is the source of the title.

This watercolor will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
