Lot Essay

This costume was retained by the designer Penny Rose after filming and given as a gift to the current vendor.

In the interview with Charles Gandee in VOGUE, October, 1996, Madonna recalls the evolution of the costumes for Evita which had to be made with her pregnancy in mind....it was all about skirts and seamed stockings and the forties. I was trying to get into Eva Perón's aesthetic as much as possible....Christian Dior did a lot of clothes for Eva...costume designer, Penny Rose, said "Look, we're just going to get some great seamstresses going on copying old Diors from pictures". Eva's interesting because her evolution as both a human being and a politician was very apparent in her clothes....when she went to Europe, she was ridiculed. So she re-did herself. And that's when she started wearing all the Dior suits.
