This present drawing relates to another view of Purton Hall that is in the William Salt Library, Stafford. Varley executed several other views of Purton Hall, home to the Wrottesley family from the mid 17th Century. The house, originally a moated building, dates from the 14th Century. By 1820, when Varley was sketching the house, it had fallen into disrepair and the moat had been replaced by a fishpond. The site today is within a private garden. Varley is recorded in the Staffordshire Historic Environment Record office as having used his Patent Graphic Telescope to carry these sketches out.
