Stylistically the present drawing appears to date from circa 1801. During this year he spent four months in Staffordshire with Daniel Whalley, the father-in-law of his sister Martha. Known drawings from this period relate to a three week sketching tour of the Peak District. The use of wash over a pencil outline is similar to G. Reynolds, The Early Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, New Haven and London, 1996, nos. 01.18 and 01.23, pls. 126 and 131.

This drawing was formerly in the collection of Baron Cornelius von Heyl zu Herrnsheim, founder of the Heylshof Art Museum, Worms, Germany.
