Lot Essay
Stylistically the present drawing appears to date from circa 1801. During this year he spent four months in Staffordshire with Daniel Whalley, the father-in-law of his sister Martha. Known drawings from this period relate to a three week sketching tour of the Peak District. The use of wash over a pencil outline is similar to G. Reynolds, The Early Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, New Haven and London, 1996, nos. 01.18 and 01.23, pls. 126 and 131.
