Lot Essay

N.N. Solly, Memoirs of the Life of David Cox, London, 1873, p. 64 records that 'Cox and his son, having spent the first week of their 1829 tour in Calais, took the diligence to Amiens and remained there for two days, sketching the cathedral from the citadel, the Rue de Condé, and other subjects'. From Amiens they walked to Beauvais and took the diligence from there to Paris on account of the very hot weather.

A pencil sketch, 9¼ x 6 in., presumably executed on the spot, for the present work is listed in the Witt Library (private collection).
