Lot Essay

Smith studied at the Slade School of Art, starting his career as a lithographer before becoming a painter. He produced numerous interior genre scenes and at least one other that bears the same title as the present work (sold by Phillips, London, 13 November 1990, lot 71). After attending the wedding of one of his daughters in India, he decided to remain in the country for a further seven years with his wife, the artist Martha Sarah Smith (née King), and received a number of commissions for the Maharajah of Mysore.
