Lot Essay

Francis Howard (1874-1954) was both an artist and art critic and he donated a number of Modern British paintings to the Tate. In 1898, he founded the International Society, which aimed to provide a forum for International, as well as British artists to exhibit their work, both Whistler and Rodin were active members.
