In buying directly from the producers of the latest emerald synthetics, John Donald was able to source interesting gemmological specimens from Pierre Gilson in France, who had developed a flux fusion method for growing emerald crystals in 1964. Rarely had crystals, as opposed to faceted stones, been set in jewellery, and the unusual, organic and naturalistic effect of this brooch appealed to Princess Margaret.
