Following the design of the 'Caged Bird' jewel in 1942 in support of the Free France Movement to symbolise the Occupation of France, Cartier created the 'Liberated Bird' brooch in 1944 to commemorate French Liberation. In addition to the symbolism of freedom, the red, white and blue colours of the gems represented the colours of the French flag. A series of these Liberation Jewels were later revived by the firm.
