The sitter was the third daughter of Edward Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough (c.1640/41-1689), and Lady Elizabeth Wriothesley, daughter and co-heir of the 4th Earl of Southampton. Elizabeth was married on 9 June 1704 to the 1st Duke of Portland, and died 19 March 1737.
