Lot Essay

The sitter is thought to be Edward Morris. The fourth surviving son of Dr. Michael Morris. A Barrister (called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1795), he was Member of Parliament for Newport (1803-1812) and was Master in Chancery from April 1807 until his death on 13 April 1815, aged 47. Edward Morris married on 29 January 1809 Mary (d.1864), youngest daughter of the Hon. Thomas Erskine (1750-1823), third son of the 10th Earl of Buchan, subsequently 1st Baron Erskine, the Lord Chancellor, with whom he had four daughters. His father-in-law was also painted by Lawrence in 1806; (the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn, K. Garlick, op.cit, no.277).

In the early 20th century, this picture was in the collection of the celebrated American novelist and playwright Booth Tarkington. Financial success had allowed Tarkington to form a notable collection of English portraits of the 17th and 18th centuries.
