Lot Essay

It is possible that the present work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864 as Highland Spate - sheep being rescued from the rocks, no.231.

Ansdell travelled extensively in the north of England and Scotland, painting shooting and stalking subjects, and achieved notable success in creating dramatic scenes with sheep, as seen in the present work.
