The 39-ton cutter Guernsey Packet was built in 1785 and is recorded as trading between Jersey and Southampton at least until 1790. Her first master, who may well have commissioned this portrait of her, was Peter Mourant who later commanded the Jersey privateer Queen during the Napoleonic Wars. By 1790, she had passed into the ownership of Mr. Thomas Tacker who employed Captain William Kerby to command her, after which she disappears from record.
