Stanislas, born in Lemberg (Lvov/Lviv), was elected King of Poland in 1704 with the help of King Charles XII of Sweden. After the defeat of his protector at Poltava in 1709, he was driven out by Tsar Peter the Great of Russia to make room for Elector Frederick Augustus I 'the Strong' of Saxony who became King Augustus II of Poland. After years of errances, he was proposed by the Regent of France a modest pension and a residence in Wissembourg, a small town north of Strasbourg on the Franco-German border. In 1725, Stanislas' daughter Maria, aged 22, married young King Louis XV, aged 15, and the Lesczcynskis left Wissembourg for Meudon. After a further attempt to regain the crown of Poland, Stanislas formally abdicated in 1736, receiving the duchies of Lorraine and Bar.
