A CARVED, INSCRIBED AND DATED BAMBOO BRUSHPOT
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The cylindrical vessel is inscribed with a lengthy text describing the story of Su Dongbo's boat trip down the Yangzi River, as depicted in the deeply carved scene on the reverse of the brushpot with four scholars in a boat, and an attendant brewing tea on the bow, sailing down the frothing river with rocky cliffs along the banks grown with pine and wutong trees, the inscription ending with the carver's name, Deng Wei, and dated to the Summer of the cyclical yimao year corresponding to 1795
