A RARE MING CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER HEXAGONAL STACKED BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY

The flat top of the cover deeply carved with a lively scene of three boys playing in a garden under a fruit tree, with two depths of diaper representing the ground and the air, the sides of the cover and three tiers of containers with composite floral scrolls, the bottom layer with an integral stand decorated with overlapping lotus petals above a shaped apron with small cloud-feet at each corner

A nearly identical hexagonal tiered box, decorated with Budai on the cover, is illustrated by D. Clifford, Chinese Carved Lacquer, London, 1992, pl. 37; while a square box with four layers, similarly decorated with composite flower scrolls and with an identical integral stand, is in the British Museum and illustrated by H. Garner, Chinese Lacquer, London, 1979, pl. 41. Cf. also a smaller quatrefoil stacked box with similar stand, floral scrolls and landscape scenes on the cover, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, 5, Beijing, 1995, pl. 33.
