A RARE POLYCHROME LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The domed cover lacquered with a central shou character medallion within a single lotus bloom, surrounded by further medallions, each alternating petal pierced with scrolling tendrils issuing leaves and suspending a ruyi-head or further blooms, the sides with further borders of exotic blooms interspersed with bats, their wings outstretched, all picked out in lacquer of red, blue, black, gold and silver tones reserved on a brown ground

Lot Essay

Compare the gilt decoration with a quatrefoil box and cover decorated with sprigs of fruit and lingzhi, with cranes to the sides illustrated in Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1995, no. 105; and to a lacquer box containing stacked trays, visible through the circular aperture at the sides, decorated with fruiting fines and elaborate lotus blooms, illustrated in Zhong Guo Qi Qi Jing Hua, The Finest Chinese Lacquers, no. 260.
