The present figure was made by Xu Yunling whose family was renowned in the later 18th century for Dehua wares characterised by a great elaboration of detail, light construction, a hollow base and uniform milky-white glaze, all qualities represented in the present piece. Another Bodhisattva seated in padmasana on a lotus throne atop a standing lion, also made by Xu Yunling, sold in our New York Rooms, 1 December 1988, lot 263.
The style of the Boddhisattva, her crown and elaborate beadwork, is closely related to an 18th-century standing Guanyin from the Collection of Stanley Charles Nott, sold in our New York Rooms, 20 November 1979, lot 226, and again, 10 December 1987, lot 218.
