A VERY RARE CLOISONNE ENAMEL AND GILT BRONZE GUI
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY

The compressed globular body supported on a flaring circular foot, decorated in vivid enamels on a light blue ground with a central band to one side with clusters of grapes suspended from vines, the other with a row of chrysanthemum flowerheads, all between lappet and further undulating floral bands, flanked by twin loop handles issuing from elaborate gilt-bronze dragon masks

Lot Essay

The present vessel is unusual for its decoration of a naturalistic scene of grapes growing on vines on one side, contrasted on the reverse by a more stylised depiction of chrysanthemums. No other censer of this design appears to be published.
