QIANLONG BLUE ENAMEL FOUR-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE SQUARE AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The cup painted with two shaped panels enclosing landscape scenes of scholars gathered by a lake, the enamels finely stippled to produce the shading of colours, all against a yellow ground with ruby-pink foliage, applied with a pair of gilt-metal archaistic dragon loop handles, all above a blue-enamel foliate scroll encircling the foot, the interior with turquoise enamel

Lot Essay

The present cup was inherited by Madame Nelly Loup-Borel from her father Eugene Borel, who reputedly witnessed the burning of the Yuanmingyuan in 1860. The cup was valued at 600 Swiss francs in an inventory of Madame Loup-Borel's collection of porcelains, cloisonnes and curios in Geneva dated 23 August, 1927.
