A MUGHAL WHITE JADE LOBED BOWL
18TH CENTURY

The thin walls divided into eight petal-shaped lobes converging in the centre of the bowl, finely carved in low relief with a band of alternating chrysanthemum flowers and buds encircling the base above the spreading foliate foot carved as overlapping leaves, flanked by two broad acanthus leaves folded over at the tips to form the handles, punctuated by flowerhead finials, the well-polished semi-translucent stone with small areas of opaque inclusions

Lot Essay

A bowl of similar form with broad acanthus leaf handles but with a plain foot is illustrated in Hindustan Jade in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1983, pl. 11. Compare also a Mughal-style lobed white jade bowl sold in our New York Rooms, 20 March 2001, lot 25.
