Lot Essay

The oval medallion and patera-carved back and tapering panelled legs in imitation of 'Antique' herms is designed in the Roman style popularised by the published designs of Sheraton and Hepplewhite, c. 1790. A mahogany armchair of this pattern was sold from The Moller Collection, Sotheby's, London, 18 November 1993, lot 96. The latter chair was illustrated in R. W. Symonds, Furniture Making in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century England, London, 1955, p. 100, pl. 18.
