The shaped rectangular top inlaid with an oval above four graduated panelled drawers, the top drawer lined in felt and with a baize-lined slide, on shaped bracket feet, the metalwork replaced, the carcase inscribed 'Renovated 1863', restorations to the back left corner of the top, the feet apparently original

A closely related commode of serpentine form with canted angles, and oval patera inlaid top is labelled by the St Paul's Churchyard cabinet-maker, Henry Kettle (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 289, fig. 544). Henry Kettle moved into Philip Bell's premises at No. 23 St Paul's Churchyard in about 1774.
