Each with reversible later nozzle within a guilloche band and ovoid body, the shoulders with ram's heads issuing entrelac arms, hung with ribbon-tied swags, on a waisted socle, and square stepped plinth, the interior with copper lining and gilt flowerhead screw, the blue john bodies repaired

This model of candle vase, appropriate for the adornment of an Etruscan or goût grec drawing room, with its Antique goat's heads hung with laurel and Ceres' libation paterae guilloche band, corresponds to a design by Matthew Boulton in his Pattern Book, vol. I, p. 171. Several variations of this pattern of vase with reversible nozzle exist and are illustrated in N. Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, London, 2002, p. 305, figs. 277-279. A single vase was sold anonymously Sotheby's, London, 19 March 1982, lot 108, a single vase was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 7 February 1991, lot 3; a pair sold by Lord Brabourne, in these Rooms, 19 November 1992, lot 4 and also 6 July 1995, lot 10.
