Lot Essay

A nearly identical table dispaying the same stamp 'GILLOWS./LANCASTER' was sold anonymously, Phillips, London, 21 November 2000, lot 71. A comparable amboyna sofa table with similar scrolled feet and turned stretcher was sold anoymously, Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 45 (£15,525). Though the latter table was unmarked it can now be firmly attributed to Gillows on the basis of the current lot and the other sofa table, both stamped by Gillows.
