Lot Essay

Major Vernon-Wentworth is descended from the Earls of Strafford of Wentworth Castle, Yorkshire. Five chimneypieces originally from Wentworth Castle, one of the quintessential princely palaces fo the Augustan era, were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 November 1996, lots 178-182. They had remained at Wentworth until circa 1951, when they were removed to Blackheath Mansion, Suffolk, by Major and Mrs. Vernon-Wentworth.
