AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED KYATHOS
ATTRIBUTED TO THE NIKOSTHENIC WORKSHOP, CIRCA 515-505 B.C.
Centered by two confronting sphinxes, each depicted seated, with sickle-shaped wings and long curving tails; one side with a warrior between two standing youths, the nude warrior lunging to the right, his head turned back, holding a spear in his left hand, a chlamys draped over his right arm, each youth facing left, tightly wrapped in a patterned himation, and holding a staff; the other side with a warrior and one standing youth, each similarly depicted; details in added red and white; the central ridge of the high-arching handle terminating in a foliate leaf on the interior above the rim, a knobbed disk finial at its peak, an inscription on the underside, "OE\KLF\k"
