Lot Essay

The presence of a satyr and goat indicates that this fragment likely comes from a Dionysiac-themed sarcophagus. For the type see the complete sarcophagus with Dionysus and Ariadne, no. 67, pp. 138-142 in Baratte and Metzger, Musée du Louvre, Sarcophages en pierre d'époques romaine et paléochrétienne.
