Lot Essay

Two 'sphynx' are listed in the 1784 ..Descriptive Catalogue of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory, Section I, Statues, No.s 55 and 58. The present model is possibly No.58.
A pair of sphinxes by Coade, of the present model, dated 1840, from Kyneton House, Bristol sold Sotheby's, London 4 June 1999, lot 155.
