Lot Essay

During the mid 1920s, Wood worked from a studio in Paris on the Rue des Saints Pères, supported by his wealthy and well-connected friend Antonio de Gandarillas. He spent the mornings drawing from the nude and the afternoons concentrating on painting. Another oil from this series, Wooden Bridge on the Seine previously in the collection of Eleanor, the Countess Castle Stewart, was sold in these rooms on 21 November 2003, lot 14.
