In the present work, Lowry has depicted a line of people standing on street, three of the adults turn to look at the right hand figure, who walks with his shoulders overly hunched and disproportionally large feet. Lowry was fascinated by the strange characters that he encountered around him. He said in a taped conversation with Monty Bloom, 'People say to me: "You can't see characters as weird as that", but there's not one of them I haven't seen. I saw a woman in Manchester with two club feet and she shouted at me: "What the bloody hell are you looking at" and then she started laughing, he he he he. Poor old soul' (quoted in S. Rohde, L.S. Lowry: A Biography, Salford, 1999, p. 371).
