Lot Essay

The statue of Admiral Duquesne in the Place Nationale is by Dantan the Elder. Duquesne, a native of Dieppe, defeated the Dutch admiral de Ruyter in 1676. Sickert painted the statue on a number of occasions. The present, very finished drawing, was probably a study for the painting (see W. Baron, loc. cit.).
