The music-hall of La Gaité-Montparnasse, Paris, was situated at 26 rue de la Gaité. There are three known paintings of La Gaité Montparnasse and it is probable that all three were painted in 1907, upon Sickert's return to Paris after his break in London at the beginning of the year when he was overseeing his exhibition at Bernheim Jeune in January. Wendy Baron comments, 'There are several drawings dated 1907 and inscribed Gaité Montparnasse. The construction of each of the Gaité Montparnasse paintings is dominated by Sickert's delight in portraying the sensuous serpentine curves of its upper storey' (see W. Baron and R. Shone, exhibition catalogue, Sickert Paintings, London, Royal Academy, 1992, p. 190).

A chalk drawing of this subject, squared in yellow chalk, again signed and inscribed in the same way as the present work from circa 1907 is in the collection of Manchester City Art Galleries (see exhibition catalogue, Walter Sickert 'drawing is the thing', Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery, 2004, pp. 46, 51, no. 2.09, illustrated).
