Lot Essay

The present view is of Laughton Place, with its distinctive tower, near Glynde in Sussex, close to Charleston. In 1928 Virginia Woolf fell in love with the tower and wished to buy it, but the purchase proved impossible. A very similar view was painted by Duncan Grant, the two artists sitting side-by-side.
