Lot Essay

Gaudier executed a number of self-portrait works including the present work circa 1913-14. One work, titled Head of an Idiot, 1912 (plaster; Victoria and Albert Museum, London) is thought to be a satirical self-portrait. This work, which was also cast in bronze, shows the simplification of form that Gaudier often strived for. Another self-portrait, dating to 1912, is executed in pencil (National Portrait Gallery, London) shows Gaudier's sharp angular features which are apparent in the present work.
