Lot Essay

This early nude painting, whilst very different to his later and more abstract work, clearly shows Hilton's interest in bold colour and outlines. There is a distinct similarity in the use of the colour and patterning that Vuillard employed, and the subject matter is reminiscent of Sickert's nude studies.
